About Sayward, BC, Canada

Sayward is a beautiful 45-minute drive north of Campbell River, or about 2-1/2 hours south of Port Hardy on Vancouver Island. Sayward is nestled in the White and Salmon River valleys. On driving in and about Sayward, you will cross these rivers several times as they snake about. Both rivers enter the Johnstone Straits at Kelsey Bay.

Our population is approximately 1200 people of all ages. The majority of residents are families and retired folks.

There is a lot to do in Sayward. We have salmon fishing and, at the right time of the season, you will see the whales as they pass by on their migration. There is also freshwater fishing in our nearby rivers and lakes.

Sayward is also known for having some excellent softball teams for both girls and boys and for the teens and adults, there are several slow pitch teams. We have a wonderful recreation centre with a pool, whirlpool, sauna, gym, weight room and a play school. Some other recreational sports in the area are hiking, hunting, camping, canoeing, swimming, and cross-country and downhill skiing.

Our school includes K-9 with grades 10, 11 and 12 going into Campbell River each day by bus.

We have two different fire halls and an ambulance stationed here and run by local volunteer help. Two police officers reside here and we have a business community with many local trades people. There is also a library and a marina.

Our weather includes about 70 inches of rain annually with temperatures in July averaging 60 degrees and, in January, averaging 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Shopping in Sayward is mainly at the mall where there is a big grocery store with a liquor store, bakery/deli, fresh produce and meat. There are several places to buy fishing tackle, rent movies, buy gas, do laundry, have your hair done, dine out and there are many artisans in the area.

I like Sayward because this is a place where you can be yourself - you can be a hermit if you want and people respect that, or you can join every group going. The fresh air here is wonderful and the scenery is breathtaking! Rural? Yes, but only 45 minutes to town and what a drive! You will see deer grazing alongside the road, eagles flying high, and you may even see a small bear or elk grazing. Just wait until you see the magic of Roberts Lake! It is truly a wonderful place to reside and well worth a visit.
